What crash lock bottom boxes is, and when it is the right call
The crash lock base is glued and interleaved in production so that opening the flat carton locks the bottom into a square, load-bearing panel. It is the standard base for anything heavy enough that a tucked bottom would be a liability — bottles, jars, tinned goods, candles.
It also removes the assembly decision from the person packing. There is one motion, it cannot be done in the wrong order, and it takes roughly a third of the time of folding a tuck base. On a line running thousands of units a day that is a real labour number.
Runs on 18pt board and heavier. Minimum 500 units because the base is machine-glued. Add a tuck top, a tear strip or a window without affecting the base construction. For lighter units a standard folding carton is cheaper, and auto bottom boxes apply the same principle on a tuck end. Board weight decides more than the product category does. Most boxes we are asked to quote are specified one step heavier than they need to be, and that shows up on every unit.
Where a product sits near the limit of a construction, ask for both options to be quoted. The difference is usually a cent or two a unit and the decision becomes obvious.
